Orthopedic Tech

Newport News, VA

 

Description

Primary Location

Under supervision of the department physicians and advanced practice providers, assists the physician/provider with all routine and advanced orthopedic clinical procedures as described below. Provides written instructions for patients in the use of various orthopedic devices and sets up and maintains supplies and equipment; may provide direction to the  Junior Ortho Tech or Clinical Personnel.


Essential Functions:
• Upholds Healthcare Facility Policies and Procedures, Principles of Responsibilities and applicable state, federal and local laws
• Assists the physician with all routine and advanced orthopedic and orthopedic clinical procedures
• May instruct the work of  other Orthopedic Technicians and trainees in the application of casts, traction setups, treatment room procedures, and other procedures and techniques to patients of the age group served
• Performs all of the Essential Duties and Responsibilities of Orthopedic Technician.
• The following is a non-exhaustive list of functions in the Medical Office Setting:
• May apply casts, splints, traction or other orthopedic devices to the extent that this is a technical function that does not involve choosing the appropriate treatment, setting a fracture, manipulating bone or tissue or assessing that patient's clinical condition
• Remove casts, splints and orthopedic devices
• Prepare the patient for procedures
• Set up instruments and equipment for procedures
• Apply and remove bandages and dressings that does not involve debridement
• Provide written instructions to patients regarding proper cast care and use of crutches and devices
• Remove sutures or staples from superficial incisions after sutures/staples have been assessed for removal by a provider.
• Assist patients in ambulation and transfers
• Collect and record patient data including height, weight, temperature, pulse, respiration rate and blood pressure, and basic information about the presenting and previous condition(s)
• Record patient care services provided in the medical record
• Other technical or administrative tasks as required

Basic Qualifications:
Experience
• Two (2) years experience as an Orthopedic Technician within the last three (3) years.
Education
• Graduate of an accredited Orthopedic Technician program or equivalent training in the military or two (2) years of full time experience as an Orthopedic Technician.
• High School diploma or equivalent.
Licenses, Certifications, Registrations
• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Certified by the National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologist (NBCOT).

Additional Requirements:
• Demonstrates knowledge and ability to utilize principles, practices, and techniques of basic human anatomy, types of fractures, orthopedic equipment, and use of cast &splints.
• Ability to demonstrate and apply knowledge of cast application and traction and orthopedic appliance application.
• Ability to demonstrate and utilize knowledge of clinical orthopedic and sterile techniques.
• Under direct supervision, the ability to work and assist in the Treatment Room.
• Customer service skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Minor Procedure background preferred.

GENERAL ST ATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES

In a team relationship with the Registered Nurse, the Licensed Practical Nurse contributes to the nursing process through on-going systematic data collection, assisting in the health assessment, recording observations, goal identification and patient health education.

Performs duties under the direct supervision of the Health Sendees Administrator and is accountable for use of delegated authority.

Pursuant to §15.2-1603 of the Code of Virginia incumbent is appointed at-will and senses at the pleasure of the Sheriff. This position is non-exempt.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  •  Responds to initiates the care for medical emergencies throughout the facility. This includes the ability to perform continuous CPR until properly relieved.

  • Administers and documents medications on the Medication Administration Record.

  • Assists with histories and physicals on inmates.

  • Assesses patient's health status and refers to appropriate level of healthcare provider.

  • Physically assists Physician in patient examinations and treatments.

  • Documents all nursing care provided.

  •  Implements and follows up on Physician / Dentist written orders and verbal orders if permitted.

  •  Teaches healthcare information to patients and correctional staff.

  •  Adheres to safety and security policies and participates in disaster drills.

  • Performs venipuncture and I. V. therapy, if certified.

  • Collects samples, specimens and cultures per Physician orders.

  • Follows security regulations for keys,, sharps .and.control.led medications.

  •  Ability to deal with and respond to stressful situations in a stressful environment.

  • Requires regular and reliable attendance.

  •  Adheres to Universal Precautions and other appropriate infection control practices.

  •  PERFORMANCE STANDARD

    All Employees are expected to follow all Federal, State and local laws; effectively work together to meet the needs of the community and the organization through work behaviors demonstrating the expectations of the Hampton Sheriffs Office. Employees are also expected to lead by example and demonstrate the highest level of ethics.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE

•        Assists in setting priority when planning care to meet the patient’s needs.

•         Assist with patient healthcare and participates in nuilti-disciplinary care conferences.

•        Counts CDS Drugs and contraband, if required.

•        Assist Physician in minor medical / surgical procedures.

•        Transcribes and posts all therapeutic orders generated by the Physician.

•      Initiates and documents prescribed treatments for nursing interventions in compliance with policy and procedure.

•        Administers routine and/or PRN medications as ordered.

•        Practices universal precautions when providing nursing procedures.

•        Assists in maintaining a neat, clean and safe environment for patients and coworkers.

•        Keeps patient information confidential and respects the patient’s right to privacy.

•        Keeps health team informed of observations and changing conditions of patients.

•        Must maintain and show proof of an active state nursing license  and place a  copy of the license in the

personnel file maintained by the RN supervisor.

•        Is cognizant and adheres to all security regulations of the institution.

•        Attends scheduled in-service programs and staff meetings.

•        Maintains an active CPR certification.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduate from a licensed Practical Nursing Program. Currently licensed as a Practical Vocational Nurse in the stale. Good physical health, able to function in a stressful environment arid relate well to the patients, security staff and healthcare team members.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

The job may risk exposure to extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, noise, fumes, odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, traffic and toxic or caustic chemicals. Risk of exposure to bio-hazard communicable diseases and bodily fluids.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS

Must have the capability to hear, speak and see to communicate with the general public. Must have the strength and ability to apprehend, subdue and restrain criminal offenders. Physical exertion may be required to climb stairs and over walls, run. bend, twist, reach, crawl through tight spaces, kneel in confined areas; sit for prolonged periods of time; movc/push/pull or lift heavy objects exceeding 50 lbs; Subject to 24-hour call back for emergencies.
